Dipton Substation Upgrade Project

The Dipton Substation, located in Northern Southland, originally received its power supply at 33kV from Heddon Bush, with backup from Lumsden.

To enhance both reliability and capacity in Northern Southland, a new 66kV transmission circuit was built, originating from the Winton Substation, passing through Centre Bush and Dipton, and extending to Lumsden via the Oreti Valley. This upgrade significantly improved the substation's ability to meet the region's growing energy demands.

During construction, the Dipton Substation was fully offloaded using a Mobile Substation, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the area throughout the project.

2017

By December of 2017 the expanded substation yard now featured a new control room, a 66/11kV 5 MVA Transformer, two 66kV Auto Air Break Switches, a new 66kV SF6 Circuit Breaker, an 11kV Incoming Circuit Breaker, an 11kV VT, and a Local Service transformer. Substantial upgrades were made to the protection systems for both the 66kV and 11kV circuits, ensuring the overall reliability and safety of the substation's operations.
