Spey Street Substation
Reinforcing Invercargill City Electricity Supply
Electricity Invercargill’s Doon Street Substation was a critical component of the electricity supply for a significant portion of Invercargill city, including the CBD. However, due to its age and construction, it was identified as a strategic risk.
The decision was made to relocate the 33& 11kV supplies from Doon Street to a new Substation on Spey Street.
The design of the new substation aimed to minimize its impact on the surrounding commercial and residential areas.
Spey Street Substation was designed to receive two 33kV supplies via underground cables from TransPower Invercargill, located near the city's eastern boundary. Twin transformer enclosures and switchrooms were incorporated to ensure redundancy, allowing continuous operation in the event of a supply failure to either one.
